چکیده

We derive closed-form expressions for the effective index of subwavelength gratings up to the fourth and the second order for TE and TM polarization, respectively. These expressions are valid for arbitrary grating structures and are a generalization of previous results obtained for lamellar gratings with one groove per period (a structure often called a two-component layered medium). The effective-medium-theory predictions are carefully validated with exact electromagnetic theories for slanted and unslanted sinusoidally modulated volume gratings and for classical mounting. It is shown that, even for large period-to-wavelength ratios near the cutoff value, the form birefringence is accurately predicted at any angle of incidence. © 1998 Optical Society of America [S0740-3232(98)01107-7] OCIS codes: 050.1970, 050.7330, 260.1440.

Experimental evidence of mixed gratings with a phase difference between the phase and amplitude grating in volume holograms.

The Coupled Wave Theory of Kogelnik has given a wellestablished basis for the comprehension of how light propagates inside a hologram. This theory gives an accurate approximation for the diffraction efficiency of volume phase holograms and volume absorption holograms as well. Mixed holograms (phase and absorption) have been also treated from the point of view of this theory. For instance, Guibe...

Design considerations of form birefringent microstructures.

Diffraction characteristics of high-spatial-frequency (HSF) gratings are evaluated for application to polarization-selective computer-generated holograms by the use of two different approaches: second-order effective-medium theory (EMT) and rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA). The reflectivities and the phase differences for TE- and TM-polarized waves are investigated in terms of various inpu...

High-Contrast Gratings based Spoof Surface Plasmons

In this work, we explore the existence of spoof surface plasmons (SSPs) supported by deep-subwavelength high-contrast gratings (HCGs) on a perfect electric conductor plane. The dispersion relation of the HCGs-based SSPs is derived analyt- ically by combining multimode network theory with rigorous mode matching method, which has nearly the same form with and can be degenerated into that of the S...

Volume Holograms in Photopolymers: Comparison between Analytical and Rigorous Theories

There is no doubt that the concept of volume holography has led to an incredibly great amount of scientific research and technological applications. One of these applications is the use of volume holograms as optical memories, and in particular, the use of a photosensitive medium like a photopolymeric material to record information in all its volume. In this work we analyze the applicability of...

Imaging of Volume Phase Gratings in a Photosensitive Polymer, Recorded in Transmission and Reflection Geometry

Volume phase gratings, recorded in a photosensitive polymer by two-beam interference exposure, are studied by means of optical microscopy. Transmission gratings and reflection gratings, with periods in the order of 10 μm down to 130 nm, were investigated. Mapping of holograms by means of imaging in sectional view is introduced to study reflection-type gratings, evading the resolution limit of c...
